Copyright in need of change…Why?

December 16, 2009 by bcov7

Copyright law does not need to be changed.  Whether folks are going to the movies and “boot-legging” films, or folks are downloading music on their computers when they should not be, or we, as student/researchers are writing papers and including works in our papers form authors without giving the credit, copyright law, if anything, should be more strongly enforced.

Yes, we all know that the economy is at a downturn for the moment, and it  may be very difficult to enjoy the finer things in life (i.e. – going to the movies, buying c.d.’s of music we would like to listen to).  However, this is not or ever should be an excuse to cheat movie or music makers out of the money they may have worked very hard for.  When we do these things we are steling from others and taking money out of other peoples pockets, this is very immoral and against the law.

Another problem is with writing papers, of any sort.  The lazy man’s way out is to simply paraphrase something that was written already by the person(s) that take the time and do their research.  Typically this happens when one waits for the last minute to accomplish a task and need an easy way out of it.  Paraphrasing or summarizing any work of an author without acknowledging where you received the inspiration for is plagarism and goes against copyright laws.

So the question now is why should copyright laws be changed, to give the lazy person an easy way out, or to steal from others, because this is what will happen and it will ulimately lead to an unjust society, one even more so than now.

Gambling…Again

October 26, 2009 by bcov7

When searching on the internet using the word “Gambling”, I found that information was the same when seraching on bing and yahoo.  But when i searched on lii.org the resources i found we’re a little different in that there were some some sources that i found on this serach engine that i found on bing and yahoo.  But when i serached on deepdyve.com i found the resources there to be significantly different in that one than the others.

In actuality i found some sources in lii.org to be a bit more scholoarly than in bing and yahoo but when searching in deepdyve it seemes to have more scholarly relevant “hits”.  Where I would find sites like “Gambling Anonymous” and “How to improve your gambling chances” on bing and yahoo, I would find sites that would include remedies to gambling and ways to solve the problem of gambling on deepdyve, and though there we’re maybe one or two “hits” on yahoo and bing that included similar posts, lii.org had a bit more and deepdyve contained a lot more.

October 12, 2009 by bcov7

Well where do I go regularly for the news is the question?  everyday when i wake up i keep the television on channel 1 (ny1 news) cause its local news and more relevant…to me.  when I’m around a television at 5pm i turn to channel 7 to watch eyewitness news.  for like…entertainment i like to watch TMZ on channel 5 but i dont read any magazines or go to any websites for entertainment.

for sports at any time i either go to espn.com or i turn to any available espn channel.

for weather i also turn to channel 1 but then sometimes i turn to the weather channel.

if i decide to read a newspaper, which is seldom, i read new york newsday.

I used EBSCO host for part 2 of the homework because I knew it’d be easier the locate the information the instructor(s) was asking for.  I also knew it’d be easier to narrow down my results which it was.

I looked at the author and the information about the website that these articles came from and also thoroughly read each article and looked for things like total bias for one side of reform, which I did.  And again, for this assignment thats what I had to look for.

Criteria thats important when I am looking for info is 1)spelling and grammar: cause how non-scholarly is it to read an article that you have to go out on a limb to revise yourself before fully understanding it.  2)bias: if it seems like it is trying to persuade the reader into choosing sides with the article w/o giving info from the other side of the argument, then more than likely i’ll overlook it.  3)familiarity: if i am familiar with a website and i know its known for lousy content or its opinions and beliefs are totally one-sided, then again i’ll overlook it.

The second homework was ok.  It actually gave a new appreciation for these sites that the schools provide for us like JSTOR and EBSCO host.  I say this because on Google you don’t find anything useful when you’re looking for a legitimate definition for something.

Why are you taking an online class? I am taking an online class because it is a lot easier than attending school an extra day when I work as much as I do.

What do you hope to get out of it? To gain a better understanding for researching the internet.  To make it easier for myself to search on the internet.

What other classes are you taking?   I am also taking ENG 103

What do you want to do after LaGuardia?  Transfer to a four year school and eventually obtain a graduate degree in my field.
